The Ristis Restaurant mountain chalet, which is only accessible by cable car, is now powered by SunStyle solar tiles. The 650 square metre solar roof system produces around 100,000 kWh of electricity per year, more than the restaurant needs. By replacing oil heating with a wood pellet heating system and implementing other energy efficiency measures, Brunni-Bahnen Engelberg AG became the first carbon-neutral cable car company in Switzerland in May 2018.
A company focused on energy efficiency
Brunni-Bahnen Engelberg AG has received an award from the Swiss climate protection foundation Myclimate for its efforts to promote energy efficiency.
In addition to the Ristis restaurant, whose roof is completely covered with SunStyle solar tiles, the roof of the former mountain station is also equipped with photovoltaic panels. This means that the resort has its own solar power plant, which can be used to produce artificial snow for the entire ski area! “Clean” snow, with no CO2 emissions, produced solely from water and solar energy.
In addition to the solar power plant, energy efficiency is achieved through various installations such as:
- heat recovery systems.
- The hot water for the hotel facilities is produced by a combination of a solar thermal system and a wood pellet heater.
- the ski lift systems are powered entirely by hydroelectricity.
- and during the winter, the Ristis chairlift stops automatically when there is no one on it.
As a result, Brunni-Bahnen Engelberg AG was able to offset its carbon footprint and become the first fully carbon-neutral lift company in Switzerland through its various energy efficiency efforts.
